Our Story

Built by a gymnastics mom.
Proven at Nationals.

Sally Smith, founder of Mat 2Medals
Founder
Sally Smith
Gymnastics mom · Self-taught recruiting strategist · Built this system for her own Level 10 athlete and proved it works at USAG Nationals.

Mat 2Medals wasn't born in a boardroom. It was born in a hotel lobby at 4:00 AM during the USAG National Championships.

My name is Sally Smith, and my journey into the world of recruiting started out of necessity. Midway through my daughter Ava's Level 10 season, I realized that her talent on the floor wasn't enough if the right eyes weren't on her. I started a YouTube channel to document her progress, but when I looked for a roadmap to reach coaches, I found nothing that quite fit.

I needed a system that showcased Ava not just as an athlete, but as the honors student she worked so hard to be. I sat down and built a "Dual-Strategy" — a professional approach that balanced technical gymnastics mastery with academic achievements.

I sent our first introductory emails to 30 schools just before the State Championships. The responses were almost immediate. As we followed up with Regional results, the connections grew. For the schools we hadn't reached yet, I prepared physical folders — score charts, skill overviews with QR codes, and academic profiles — and mailed them directly to the coaches' offices so they would have her information in hand before arriving at Nationals.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Elite gymnast competing on floor

During the meet in Oklahoma City, a coach pulled me aside. She had just watched an incredible session where two girls — one of whom was Ava — had performed outstanding bar sets. These were the kinds of performances that had the crowd in a roar. But when the college coaches approached our gym coach for information, she had nothing to give them for those two specific girls. No flyers, no stats, no way to contact the families.

"The college coaches approached our gym coach for information, and she had nothing to give them for those two specific girls. No flyers, no stats, no way to contact the families."

— The moment Mat 2Medals was born

That night, I didn't go to bed. I took my laptop to the hotel lobby and, with the help of the hotel staff who helped me proof and print, I worked until 4:00 AM to create what was missing.

The next morning, I reached out to the other mom whose daughter had also been left without a voice. We sat together, plugged her info into the same template I'd built for Ava, and quickly assembled her profile. By 6:00 PM that evening, we delivered 200 copies for each girl to the coaches. The next day, every single flyer was in the hands of recruiters.

"No gymnast should stand at the biggest meet of her life without the tools to back her up."

Mat 2Medals exists because every athlete who has earned her place on that floor deserves to be seen. We provide the strategy, the materials, and the professional polish — because as a mom, I know exactly what's at stake.

Why families choose Mat 2Medals

01

We've lived this process

We're not consultants who studied the recruiting landscape from the outside. We built this system for our own athlete — which means every piece of it has been tested in the real world.

02

Pricing that's actually accessible

Gymnastics families already spend $15,000+ a year on the sport. We built this so the gap between girls who get seen and girls who don't isn't about money.

03

Honest recommendations

We'll tell you if a package won't help your athlete right now. The goal is her recruitment — not our revenue.

04

Proven results

Real responses from Brown, Illinois, Washington, Auburn, Kent State. Real coaches. Real emails. Not promises.

Why scores go up and down.
Event by event.

Every parent wonders why the score wasn't higher. Here's what judges are actually looking at — and what coaches notice on film.

Vault
What Judges Deduct
  • Block timing and repulsion height
  • Distance from springboard
  • Body position in flight phase
  • Landing distance and control
  • Steps, hops, or stumbles
  • Start Value — vault selection matters
Uneven Bars
What Judges Deduct
  • Handstand verticality every cast
  • Bent arms or legs in flight
  • Release height and timing
  • Connection value missed
  • Dismount landing and steps
  • Rhythm and flow between elements
Balance Beam
What Judges Deduct
  • Wobbles — small vs. large
  • Series connection timing
  • Leap split angle (must be 180°)
  • Turn completion and balance
  • Dismount landing and steps
  • Artistry and composition flow
Floor Exercise
What Judges Deduct
  • Tumbling landing control
  • Out of bounds (0.1 per step)
  • Leap split angle and height
  • Choreography execution
  • Pass difficulty and connection
  • Musicality and performance value
10.0 Start Value

Why 10.0 SV is the
most important number in recruiting.

A gymnast with 10.0 SV on vault can score a 9.9. A gymnast with 9.8 SV maxes out at 9.8 before deductions. Coaches know this — and it affects every recruiting decision they make.

Vault
10.0 SV Requirements
Current standard:Yurchenko Full or equivalent. High-amplitude repulsion, dynamic block, and controlled landing. The single most impactful upgrade a Level 10 athlete can make.
Uneven Bars
10.0 SV Requirements
Key elements:Release move (Jaeger, Tkatchev) + flight element + pirouette requirements. Connection value between elements adds bonus toward maximum SV.
Balance Beam
10.0 SV Requirements
Key elements:Acrobatic series (BHS+LOSO) + leap series with 180° split + compositional requirements. NCAA-style bonus for elite leap amplitude.
Floor Exercise
10.0 SV Requirements
Key elements:Two passes meeting difficulty requirements + leap series + turn requirements. Double Layout or Double Pike signals a point-scorer to coaches.
Strategic Guide

University Camp vs. Showcase.
They are not the same thing.

The most misunderstood — and most expensive — decision gymnastics families make. Understanding the difference can save thousands of dollars and open doors you didn't know existed.

Deepens Existing Relationships
University Camp
One school. One coaching staff. One close look.
What it is
  • Hosted by one college program on their campus
  • Coached by their staff and current athletes
  • A targeted evaluation of athletes they already know
The recruiting signal
  • A camp invite means a coach is already interested
  • The camp is a soft audition — not an introduction
  • How she responds to coaching matters as much as skills
When to attend
  • School is genuinely on your top 5 target list
  • Coach has already shown interest in your athlete
  • Timing doesn't conflict with a major showcase
When NOT to attend
  • Just to say you attended a D1 camp
  • School isn't actually a realistic target
  • Conflicts with a showcase where 50+ coaches attend
Starts New Relationships
College Bound Showcase
Many schools. One event. Maximum visibility.
What it is
  • Independent event designed for coach evaluation
  • 50-100+ college programs represented at one event
  • Discovery mode — coaches are actively scouting
The recruiting signal
  • One showcase can open doors to schools not yet contacted
  • Athletes from smaller programs get discovered here
  • Pre-showcase emails multiply your visibility
When to attend
  • You want broad exposure to new programs
  • Your athlete has skills ready to showcase
  • Target schools will be in attendance
When NOT to attend
  • Before skills are showcase-ready
  • Without pre-showcase email outreach to coaches
  • Conflicts with critical competition preparation
The one-line difference that changes everything
University Camp
"Deepening a relationship that already exists"
Showcase
"Starting relationships that don't exist yet"
